Practice Philosophy

There are many approaches to psychotherapy today, and most therapists are familiar with several. Some approaches address specific symptoms (e.g., relaxation training); some work because clients have a place to express feelings (like play therapy for children), and some help people to think about things differently (which also affects our emotional reactions).

What will work best for you depends on your interests, temperament and personality. In this kind of multi-theoretical approach, you are the one who should be in charge of your therapy. I view therapy as a collaborative process, in which we are sometimes detectives together, sometimes storytellers and meaning-makers and sometimes a task-oriented committee of two (or more).

Child and Family Therapy

When I am working with children under 10 or 12 years of age, I will very often recommend using child-centered play therapy. This is because children can show their feelings much more easily than they can talk about their feelings.

For many young children, talking about feelings does not seem to resolve issues as effectively as acting out the issues. If possible, I usually prefer to teach parents some simple play techniques that they can use at home.

Behavioral Medicine and Hypnosis

Medical issues can be a prime cause of stress when we are not feeling well or are in pain. Relaxation training and other stress management techniques, including hypnosis, can assist in managing many chronic medical conditions, including chronic pain.

Since I am not a medical doctor, I will ask to communicate with your primary care physician or specialist if you have such conditions so that we can all work together in alleviating your distress.

Practice Philosophy

As an individual and family therapist, my approach to counseling is client-centered with an emphasis on cognitive-behavioral therapy and family systems.

I hope to provide a warm, but professional environment which will allow a client to explore current issues and concerns, as well as a variety of tools to incorporate once they leave the office.

Professional Background

I am a Licensed Professional Counselor and National Certified Counselor specializing in adolescent, individual, family and couples therapy since 1994.

I received my undergraduate degrees at both Colorado State University and North Texas State and completed my graduate work at Pepperdine University in California. I am also a member of the American Counseling Association.
